India Government Authorized to Intercept BlackBerry Service, BIS Only

An article up on The Economic Times, an Indian news provider reported that BlackBerry has allowed the Government in India access to intercept both BBM Messages and Email sent through the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).  According to a DoT internal note up to 10 telecom service providers distributing BIS are in the process of the probe.  Customers running on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) are excluded and interception is off the table.

“The lawful access capability now available to BlackBerry’s carrier partners meets the standard required by the Government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace. We also wish to underscore, once again, that this enablement of lawful access does not extend to BlackBerry Enterprise Server,” said the spokesperson.
