Game Review: BerryFC NES Emulator For BlackBerry

Share This Post

Since I got my BlackBerry the first thing I read that intrigued me on BB related forums and websites was people talking about running emulators on their smartphones. Me being a game lover, this was something I had to have- An application allowing me to run NES roms (which I already had a huge collection of on my PC) on my BlackBerry smartphone.

After doing research I couldn’t find anything that would work on my Curve 8520-Until I saw BerryFC at the BBE store. I knew I had to have this since it supported my device 😀 so I went ahead and downloaded the BerryFC app, moved the roms from PC to mobile and I was certainly ready to do “this.”

The description on our store of the app is
* Load nes rom from SD card. Build your own game library.
* Quick Save/Load. It provide 10 save slots for each rom.
* Save/load key. You can use one touch to save/load states.
* Custom key assignment: Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, AA, BB, Start, Select, Quick Save, Quick Load, Trigger key.
* Trigger key. it can let AA or BB down without press them all the time.
* Custom screen size, hue, tint.
* Support thousands of roms.

Now unfortunately (for some) our BlackBerry keyboards aren’t game controllers but the fine people that made BerryFC planned ahead and decided to give us the freedom to configure the controls the way we want them. At the moment the emulator does not support sound but I found a fun way to bypass that… Just download the soundtrack of the game that you are running and play it via your music player.

I compared BerryFC to one of the NES emulators on my pc and they ran in sync with no problems (other than sound) what so ever.

Overall, BerryFC ran ALL my roms with no problems or glitches plus it found the roms quite easy on my SD card making my browsing minimal.

Something that was a little irritating was that when I closed the app and then reopened it, the settings that I had saved for my “controller configuration” reset itself and well there’s really nothing you can do about it but reconfigure to your liking again. If you use the emulator as much as I do then the app will be open in your background at all times so this shouldn’t be an issue. When the app is not running a ROM it doesn’t consume a lot of your devices resources so there’s no problem in running it in your background.

If you’re looking for an app that will emulate your collection of ROMS then I personally recommend BerryFC to you. And to you guys that are not familiar with the OLD NES systems and want to get into these classic gaming systems, buy the app and try it out. You have nothing to lose.

Purchase HERE from the BBE super store for only $3.99
