South Africa Advised To Be Cautious Using Mobile Hotspot

South Africa users who upgrade to BlackBerry OS 7.1 should be advised that while mobile hotspot is now available, data usage will not come from the flat-rated BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

Users will be billed per MB of data when using the BlackBerry hotspot feature, unless they have purchased a bolt on data bundle with lower per MB rates.  This means, it may cost users a lot of money on out of the contract bundle data, and using the mobile hotspot feature is essentially tethering the phone.

Although this is nothing new, tethering has always been charged separately from the the BIS, just that is now available as WiFi tethering.
