Former RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie’s name is in the headlines today with more bad news. Its been reported that York University has yet again rejected Jim Balsillie’s $30 million investment proposal. The propsal comes from his this think-thank Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) who would have funded 10 research chairs along with 20 graduate scholarships over the next 10 years.  Balsillie’s $30-million proposal sparked controversy with professors and faculty members who petitioned the rejection who fear “unprecedented” control over academic matters. The final vote ,34-7, left Jim’s think tank group out of a university partnership. Having left RIM, I wonder if Jim will try and pursue a hockey team ownership, again.

“I’m glad that it didn’t go forward,” Prof. Heron said. “This was not just a CIGI issue, it was a much larger issue of principle of how we’re going to deal with external private sponsors.”
