BBM will indeed be a social network of its own with BBM Channels also announced at BlackBerry Live, adding the help of iOS and Android users once that feature is implemented on those devices the BBM network will be on pace for a record users, probably more than any cross-platform app out there.
To download the BBM avatars, simply save the images on your mobile device or PC.
