On Monday, RIM announced the all new BBM Social Platform. If you’re uncertain as to what this brings to the table, well this is RIMs attempt to join the Social Network. Sure RIM plays a big part in Social networking already. They have a Twitter for bb app, and they even have third party apps to help you connect with your favorite third party social networks. One thing however, is RIM has not incorporated their social networking platform, up until now.

There are many different sociall theories in the Social Sciences. One thing covered in class was the internet and its role. Some argue the internet is bad, socially. People don’t interact with each other because they are too busy doing their own thing online. It’s very understandable, but we don’t have to think this is totally true. Some argue that the internet enhances sociability, and acts as one big information hub where everyone meets up and shares ideas. Let’s just add to this theory and say that the BBM Social Platform will help bring people together. Instead of keeping to yourself against a computer game, wouldn’t it be more social if you could play poker, or whatever game against your friends? That is what the BBM Social Platform is trying to achieve.

With the BBM Social Platform, developers will be able to tap into their social interactions in BBM to enable real-time, peer-to-peer interactions across their applications. The BBM Social Platform will enable a whole new class of mobile applications

Here are a few examples of how our partners plan to leverage the BBM Social Platform:

  • Kobo will be using it to create a shared shopping and reading experience — with users creating book clubs to read together, share passage and chat as they go.
  • Telmap, the leading European provider of mapping, navigation and local search applications will be using it to physically connect friends with each other, sharing locations, their whereabouts and facilitating meetups.
  • ScoreMobile will be using it to allow friends to chat about live sporting events.
  • Kik will be using it to reinvent how people share, discover and experience new music.
  • Magmic will be using it to create a completely social poker experience, inviting friends to join your table, enhancing in-game chat and creating groups for casual play.
