JPMorgan Allowing Workers to Use BlackBerry Alternatives While on the Job

Earlier this morning Bloomberg reported that JPMorgan is considering allowing employees to use iPhones for corporate e-mail as an alternative to the BlackBerry smartphone. If you’re unfimiliar with J.P. Morgan, they are the second-largest U.S. bank, with about 220,000 employees worldwide. It doesn’t stop with apple, the bank is also testing Android-based phones. The bank reportedly wouldn’t buy iPhones or Android phones for staff, but would allow them to use the devices for corporate e-mail.

Also noted, that UBS, the largest Swiss bank, with more than 63,000 employees, also is considering allowing its staff to use iPhones. A few months ago,the story notes, U.K.-based Standard Chartered Bank decided to switch to iPhones from the BlackBerry, with 15,000 phones to be distributed by year end.

What does this mean for everyone? What does this mean for RIM? What does this mean for JPMorgan and co?

For RIM

It is expected to see more pressure coming from them. Perhaps a new device? A BlackBerry 6 software update that will reach devices running 0S5? Once BlackBerry 6 is available for older model devices, we can theorize that BlackBerry activity will increase.

“This phenomenon is very new and we expect it to put increased pressure on RIM’s performance,” Pierre Ferragu said , an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd. “BlackBerry isn’t the only alternative to offer employees mobile e-mail.”

For JP Morgan

As a company, they want to adopt the best solution possible to get work done. It doesn’t take a tech genius to know that a BlackBerry is straight up work, everything else is just for entertainment, so I’m curious to see how much actual work will get done using an Iphone or Android device.
