Google Wins YouTube Copyright Case against Viacom

Viacom has been at the throat of Google for some time now. Viacom’s claim against Google was that there was an immense ammount of  YouTube copyright infringement. In return they asked for $1 billion in damages. The New York District Court today ruled that Google falls under the “safe harbor” provision of the DMCA which protects service providers from liability for user content. That enacts Google the right to brush off accusations of copyright infringement on YouTube in general. Intersting to note, it can only be liable for infringing specific copyrighted works, and since YouTube pulls videos as soon as anyone complains, it CANNOT get in any trouble. Viacom pleaded that they are going to appeal, so we will see how that goes in the future. Until those legal disputes get sorted, Head to YouTube from your BlackBerry or computer and enjoy unlimited YouTube videos!
