The social networking sites Facebook and Twitter along with BlackBerry maker RIM is set to meet with the Uk Government’s Home Affairs Select Committee tomorrow on Thursday as part of an on-going investigation into what occurred during August’s UK riots. According to reports, representatives from all three companies have been invited to give evidence at tomorrow’s Parliamentary meeting as part of a bid to learn “lessons from the disturbances of August 2011”. The role of the committee will mainly get together with the companies to distinguish their role “in spreading the disorder and in their response to it.”
In a statement on the UK Parliament website, Committee Chair Keith Vaz MP said, “it is clear that social media played a role in the disturbances—both in spreading the disorder and in the response to it—and this session will give us the opportunity to discuss the role of social media with the main companies in this field.”
Also in the session, entitled “policing large scale disorder”, several police chiefs, including those from the Greater Manchester Police, which has almost 100,000 followers on Twitter, will give evidence.
