Carleton University opens RIM Teaching and Collaborative Research Centre

Ottawa’s Carleton University and Research In Motion Limited recently entered into a partnership that aims to “keep Carleton engineering and industrial design students at the forefront of smartphone technology and design.”     The result of the partnership, which officially opened yesterday, is Carleton University’s RIM Teaching and Collaborative Research Centre.

According to Carleton University, “the centre will be used for research, teaching, outreach activities, technology demonstrations and professional development for students and researchers working on mobile technology and wireless communication with health care and automotive applications.”

RIM will be providing the centre with “software, BlackBerry® smartphones and BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablets” which students can experiment and develop apps.”

Rafik Goubran, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design expressed that  “Carleton is pleased to be working with RIM, one of the world’s leading technology companies.”  He further added that “This partnership further connects RIM to our world-class researchers and provides our students with the opportunity to experience and explore new possibilities in wireless communications and application development.  Together we will train the next generation of leaders in this exciting field.”

The university is currently strengthening its focus on Mobile Technology, and the RIM  Teaching and Collaborative Research Centre will provide a “mutually beneficial relationship” between Carleton University and Research In Motion.

Dave Dietz, Director of University Relations at RIM had this to say about the partnership:

“The RIM Teaching and Collaborative Research Centre continues the mutually beneficial relationship established between Carleton and RIM.  By working with Carleton’s outstanding students and researchers, we are finding important new opportunities, including innovations in industrial design, speech and audio processing, health-care applications and much more. We look forward to the opportunities ahead in this new centre.”

This recent partnership with Carleton University is yet another indicator of how RIM invests in the future of mobile technology.  Looks like BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook owners can look forward to more great things ahead.
