BlackBerry devices are becoming more popular among the policy makers of world governments. With foreign ministries issuing BlackBerry devices to all high level diplomats, the security and reliability of the devices make them a terminal part of the digital diplomacy process. Furthermore the social networking sites are also used by foreign ministries (The US Department of State in particular) and young diplomats are encouraged to share the policy making process on the social networking sites through their BlackBerry’s. The Turkish foreign ministry uses BBM as an effective and discreet way of communicating between diplomats and senior staff at critical meetings involving key issues. BBM has become very effective for its voicenote, file and video transfer ability over a secure connection.
BlackBerry service is unlikely to be banned in countries where it became an issue due to server locations and BBM privacy due to the fact that thousands of diplomats, government staff and policy makers rely on the service for secure communication. As for the objectivity of RIM in terms of server security one Turkish Foreign Ministry Official stated “Its like keeping our gold reserves in Switzerland. Switzerland doesn’t put one country’s interests before each other due to objectivity. Same with RIM in Canada: they treat everyone’s security the same. That’s why BlackBerry’s are reliable and safe.”.
