The jump from a six-figure salary to $250,000 and above isn’t just a pay increase — it’s a category shift. AJ Mizes, founder of The Human Reach and former global HR leader at Meta, has coached hundreds of executives through this transition. His core message: the skills that got you to six figures won’t automatically get you to $250K.

Why the $250K Threshold Is Different

Mizes explains that roles paying $250,000 and above are almost never filled through traditional job applications. They’re filled through networks, executive search firms, and direct relationships. This means that the job search strategies that work at lower salary levels — optimizing your resume for applicant tracking systems, applying to job postings, following up on applications — are largely irrelevant at this level.

“At $250K+, you’re not applying for jobs. You’re being recruited. The question is whether you’ve built the visibility, the reputation, and the relationships that make you the person executive search firms call when a role opens up.”

The Three Pillars of $250K+ Positioning

Pillar 1: Domain Authority. At the $250K+ level, generalists rarely win. Companies paying at this level want someone who is demonstrably the best in a specific domain — whether that’s scaling enterprise sales organizations, leading digital transformation initiatives, or building people operations functions at high-growth companies. Mizes works with his clients to identify and articulate their specific domain of excellence.

Pillar 2: Executive Presence. This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in career coaching. Executive presence isn’t about being loud or charismatic — it’s about the ability to command a room, communicate complex ideas simply, and inspire confidence in high-stakes situations. It’s a learnable skill, and Mizes dedicates significant coaching time to developing it.

Pillar 3: Strategic Visibility. Being excellent at your job is necessary but not sufficient. You also need to be known for being excellent. This means building a visible professional brand through speaking engagements, published thought leadership, board service, and strategic use of LinkedIn.

The Executive Search Firm Relationship

Mizes is particularly emphatic about the importance of building relationships with executive search firms before you need them. The executives who get called for $250K+ roles are the ones who have been on the radar of the relevant search firms for years — not the ones who reach out when they’re actively looking.

The strategy: identify the three to five executive search firms that specialize in your industry and function, and build genuine relationships with the relevant partners. Share your expertise, make introductions, and be helpful — not transactional.

Compensation Negotiation at the $250K+ Level

Mizes also addresses the negotiation side of the equation. At the $250K+ level, base salary is often the least important component of total compensation. Equity, bonuses, benefits, and flexibility can easily double or triple the value of the package.

Most executives significantly undervalue their negotiating leverage at this level. Mizes teaches a specific negotiation framework that helps clients understand their market value, identify the full range of negotiable elements, and negotiate confidently without jeopardizing the offer.
