ScoreMobile for the BlackBerry PlayBook [Review]

If your a sports fanatic like I am, chances are you have ScoreMobile on your BlackBerry. Well sports fans, the wait is over because ScoreMobile is now available for your BlackBerry PlayBook.

ScoreMobile is a great way to keep track of sport news, statistics, team standings, and as the name suggests, scores. ScoreMobile provides real time updates with a play by play of what’s going on in the game.

ScoreMobile has been around for quite a while. I remember in January 2009, I was working in retail. I was scheduled to work during the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Arizona Cardinals NFC Championship game. That day, as I was getting ready to go home and watch the game (which had entered the 3rd Qtr), a co-worker walks in and gives me a look. She proceeds to tell me that it looks as if the Eagles were going to lose. I confidently told her that “We got this, it’s still early”. Then she said, “Oh my God, you don’t know”. At that point, I started to worry. I grabbed  my BlackBerry and opened up the ScoreMobile application and saw what she was talking about. In awe, I made sure I left work with not too many people noticing, especially since my boss was a Cardinals fan (what are the odds?). Finally, as I walked through the mall to get to my car, I refreshed the app to see that we had scored a touchdown. I continued to walk and refreshed the app again. Now, the Eagles are driving down the field. As I read, I felt overwhelmed and sat down at the food court and continued to follow the game from my BlackBerry. Then we scored again. Eventually, I did head home but the point I’m trying to illustrate is that ScoreMobile does such a good job at the real time, play by play, that it feels as if you were watching the game.

Now that it’s on the PlayBook and you can watch videos from within the app, I imagine we’ll be able to watch highlights along with the news content and other sports related media as the app mentions. Push notifications for the app will be coming once it’s available on the PlayBook.

ScoreMobile for the BlackBerry PlayBook also allows you to favorite a team. However, this could be somewhat of a complicated task if the team you wish to favorite, season is already over. In other words, if you were a Miami Heat fan (basketball) and wished to “Favorite” them, you’d be unable to because the season has ended and their name on the app does not respond to touch. If your choosing a football team, whose season will begin in the fall (hopefully), then tap on the scores tab; search for your team by scrolling through the schedule; tap on your team then tap on “Favorite”. It sounds a bit complicated but hopefully we’ll see an easier way to select our favorite teams in future updates.

The UI (user interface) on the app is extremely smooth. One thing I enjoyed was the creativity they used. On the PlayBook, in most apps, when you swipe from the top-down, you get the settings for the app. Most of them all are rectangular and push the screen down. ScoreMobile stepped outside the box. Their settings fall into the middle of the screen in a box giving the app a classy and stylish feel to it.

In the settings, you are also able to send feedback from within the app. It doesn’t take you to the web browser or a different screen. If you are trying to leave feedback, don’t become alarm when you tap, in the boxes, to start typing and the keyboard doesn’t appear nor does a cursor. Your going to have to swipe from the left, diagonally, to manually bring up the keyboard. Where ever it was that you tapped, that is where the text will appear.

All in all, the app is functional, smooth, and basic but has a sophisticated look and feel to while remaining very user friendly. I’m happy ScoreMobile is on the PlayBook and I’m sure all sports fans using a PlayBook will be too. It’s available in BlackBerry App World for free, just click here.
