RIM Contemplating Storm 3 Name Change Upon Release?

Credit to Gizmofusion for breaking this out, but better yet, great topic for us to dissect. According to one of G’s sources, RIM is contemplating on changing the Storm title to it’s new feature touchscreen device set to launch on Verizon running BlackBerry OS 6.1. According to the report, the decision came to RIM after the previous Storm brand took “negative hits.” In it’s quest for success, the change is aimed to “the majority of users who dont follow blogs and the Interwebs.”

My major has taught me to examine variables and distinguish causality, if any.  The “negative hits” stated can be broken down into several variables. So called hits can be distinguished as bad consumer reviews, polls, emails submitted and even reading over social network traffic.

Another variable “hits” can fall under are: financial statements, inventory reports, and overall sales. How many Storm devices have been sold over the quarters? How many unsold Storms are on the market? What is the ration between Storm models manufactured and amount sold? I’m sure there are more we can think of, but these to name a few.

Overall, RIM has a strong team who will take all of these variables into account when making a decision that can possibly keep both consumers and financial reports happy. As for the “the majority of users who dont follow blogs and the Interwebs.” Good idea! Looking at the competition, Android operating system makers push out various models, which give the consumer options. Unlike Apple, BlackBerry does offer a variety, but to a distance. One variable why Android is successful is because of its flexibility in the devices they offer.

I’m no Storm user but as a BlackBerry user, I wouldn’t care too much about the name, rather appreciate a hell of a BlackBerry. I just asked our mod Taz, a Storm 2 user, if a Storm 3 was released, but not named Storm, would he get it. I also asked if the name change had any significance in his decision. His answer was, “Maybe get it. Name? Don’t really care.” That’s one Storm users opinion, what is yours?

Would the name change have any significance in your decision? If you are not a Storm user, but because of the new functions set to aunch with new models, would you go after the touchscreen BlackBerry? True or not, Let us know what you think!
