Dolby’s Lawsuit Pays Off: Winning Licensing Fees on BlackBerry PlayBook

Dolby Laboratories has scored in two lawsuits over use of audio technologies, winning “standard terms” from Research in Motion. RIM stated that they will now pay licensing fees to Dolby but did not disclose any details of the agreement. However, Dolby told analysts in a conference call last month it was looking at around $15m in back royalties from RIM and this does not include interest income.

Andy Sherman, executive VP and general counsel at Dolby, said in a statement:

“We are pleased to welcome RIM into Dolby’s family of mobile technology licensees. We believe in and will continue to protect the value of our intellectual property.”

Hopefully this arrangement can settle things down so that RIM can focus on their current problem which is figuring out a way to link a native email system to their developing software QNX.
