What’s required to use BlackBerry Protect?
The first requirement is to ensure that you are using a BlackBerry smartphone with BlackBerry® Device Software 4.6 or later. To find out which version of BlackBerry device software you have, please review the knowledge base article “How to check the version of the BlackBerry Device Software installed on the BlackBerry smartphone”. The second requirement is to ensure that you have an active BlackBerry® Internet Service data plan that supports BlackBerry Protect. If you aren’t sure which data plan you are on, please contact your wireless service provider for clarification.
The final requirement is to ensure that the BlackBerry smartphone is not activated on BlackBerry® Enterprise Server or BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Express. To see if your BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server product, complete the following steps:
1. Select Options from the home screen
2. Complete the following based on which version of BlackBerry Device Software you using:
– BlackBerry Device Software 4.x & 5.x – Select Advanced Options, then Enterprise Activation
– BlackBerry® 6 – Select Device, then Advanced System Settings, followed by Enterprise Activation
3. If you are using BlackBerry Device Software 4.x or 5.x, review the Status field to determine if your BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server product.
4. If you are using BlackBerry 6, review the Activated Accounts field as per the screenshots below to determine if the BlackBerry smartphone is active on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server product. The image on the left displays a BlackBerry smartphone that is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server product, whereas the image on the right shows a BlackBerry smartphone that has not been activated.
If you install BlackBerry Protect on a BlackBerry smartphone that contains an IT policy or is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the following message will appear when you click on the BlackBerry Protect icon.
If you encounter this message and your BlackBerry smartphone is not activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, this message is appearing as a result of your BlackBerry smartphone containing an IT policy. For example, your BlackBerry smartphone was activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server product in the past, and even though it isn’t activated currently, the IT policy is still on your device. This can also occur if you purchased a used BlackBerry smartphone that was activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server by the previous owner.
In order to use BlackBerry Protect on your BlackBerry smartphone, the IT policy must be removed from your device. If the device was provided by your employer, you should verify that they have not intentionally loaded the policy on your device and that removing the IT Policy is acceptable to them.
The process of removing an IT Policy will restore your BlackBerry smartphone to factory settings, so you will need to ensure that you create a backup of your BlackBerry smartphone first. For steps on how to backup your BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Desktop Software, review the User Guide for the version of BlackBerry Desktop Software you are using, which can be found at the BlackBerry Documentation page in the BlackBerry Desktop Software section.
For information on how to remove an IT policy from your BlackBerry smartphone, please review “How to remove an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone” and follow Method 3 if you use BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC, and Method 4 if you use BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac.
To recap: Provided you 1) are using BlackBerry Device Software 4.6 or later; 2) have an active BlackBerry Internet Service data plan; and 3) are not using BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express, you can start using BlackBerry Protect. You can download BlackBerry Protect from theBlackBerry App World™ Test Center.
