A Frustrated India Goes After Google and Skype

India will be RIMs poster child for security. They keep trying and trying, and have failed at cracking BlackBerry security. RIM said it does not have the keys necessary to offer to Indian security agencies that would help decode emails. India, which along with several other countries has expressed concerns that BlackBerry services could be used to stir political or social instability, had threatened BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion with a ban if it were denied access to data. Well so far, RIM hasn’t given up. In fact, there is nothing to give up. RIM can’t give keys it does not have. It has been noted that India has shown some concern and frustration by them sending notices to Google and Skype to set up servers in India and allow full monitoring of communication, government officials have said. They are backing off of RIM slowly, and targeting others, so it will be be interesting to see how far this goes Via Reuters

BlackBerry Poses Threat to UAE

I came across this article and decided to share it with you. With RIM being a leader among the top selling  smartphones in the world, Thier platform is being used worldwide by millions. We see more and more subscribers in different countries using a BlackBerry to get business done, so clearly there are many benefits from it. Dubai United Arab Emirates however, have vastly different views concerning BlackBerry, made by Canada’s Research In Motion. Guess what the #1 threat to them is? … BBM!  ‘Gulf state Bahrain in April warned against the use of BlackBerry Messenger software to distribute local news, drawing criticism from media freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) which called it an act of censorship.’ According to them, BlackBerry operates “beyond the jurisdiction of national legislation”, the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in a statement issued on Sunday.  They also claim that certain BlackBerry applications allow people to  services, causing serious social, judicial and national security repercussions.  To me, this is another ‘free speech’ and censorship issue involving  an agenda ridden country. Unlike countries who support free media and social networking, Dubai United Arab Emirates see it is a threat. Having a BlackBerry is a great tool to use to help spread media, so how would you feel if it got taken away from you? If you live in a country in which this is not an issue, are you a little more appeciative? I know I am! Despite certain regulations here in our country, ‘free speech’ is a given, most of the time.
