According to the company, Qualcomm announced chips that are capable of taking advantage of 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard, allowing connected devices to stream high-definition video and other data at speeds at least 3x faster than today. They state that a single chip can use fifth generation Wi-Fi, or 5G Wi-Fi, while adding support for Bluetooth and FM radio waves; the first combo chip of it’s kind. Here’s the interesting part. Qualcomm is also integrating support for 5G Wi-Fi in its dual- and quad-core Snapdragon chips that power smartphones and tablets. The chips are sampling now and should appear in products by the end of this year, said Craig H. Barratt, president of Qualcomm Atheros, in an interview.
We know RIM has adopted the Qualcomm Scorpion MSM 8655 processor at 1.2GHz in the Bold 9900 and some OS7 devices. With this announcement, it will be interesting to see if RIM stays current with their Qualcomm Chipset and gets a hold of the Qualcomm Atheros 802.11ac for Mobile and sticks this baby in the future PlayBook tablet and upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices.
What do you think?
