Who Needs Spotify – Check Out Rdio on the BB10 Browser

Rdio

If you’ve been waiting for a Spotify app to drop onto the BlackBerry platform, the wait is over. Now while this isn’t a perfect solution to the problem, there’s one thing I know about BlackBerry fans and it’s that they are crafty. Enter Rdio, a free music streaming service that will make BlackBerry fans real happy. Hit the break to find out more!

While on Twitter yesterday I stumbled across @Rdio and I decided to check it out. This service is strictly streaming over the web. At that moment it occurred to me that with the new BB10 browser, BlackBerry users have one of the most powerful internet browsers in the mobile space. I hopped on the website and signed up using my Facebook account, and linked my Twitter account.

Almost instantly I was able to stream any song I wanted from my phone and let me tell you something; this made my night. I am a huge music junkie and not having to rely on an app to stream music felt like  I had been liberated from the shackles of streaming music services.

The only draw back is that the web interface doesn’t fit in portrait mode, and in landscape mode, it’s quite difficult to decipher the difference between the “panes”.

The solution: It’s fairly simple, all you need to do is set yourself up through a PC or MAC – i.e. load up all your Playlists, Queue, and Collections – so you can just point to those on your phone and go from there! I was actually able to navigate through the site to get music streaming on my phone before trying the PC to phone alternative, so it is possible, just annoying.

Hopefully we can generate enough interest on the BB10 platform to have them design a more mobile friendly site, but for the time being, I surely cannot complain.

***EDIT*** I have been informed that I had been beat to this discovery by several who chuckled at my naivety regarding the matter. In my defense, I was so excited to see the website worked, I settled for that…however, upon further research I have agreed that forte.fm, a product of the some fans of the Rdio API, is an awesomely awesome alternative to the clunky website that rdio.com has to offer. So hop on over to forte.fm and check it out!
