York University Rejects Jim Balsillie’s $30 Million Investment, Again

Former RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie’s name is in the headlines today with more bad news. Its been reported that York University has yet again rejected Jim Balsillie’s $30 million investment proposal. The propsal comes from his this think-thank Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) who would have funded 10 research chairs along with 20 graduate scholarships over the next 10 years.  Balsillie’s $30-million proposal sparked controversy with professors and faculty members who petitioned the rejection who fear “unprecedented” control over academic matters. The final vote ,34-7, left Jim’s think tank group out of a university partnership. Having left RIM, I wonder if Jim will try and pursue a hockey team ownership, again.

RIM Smells BS and Responds to Anonymous “Open Letter”

Earlier this morning BG posted on his website, BGR, an “Open Letter” to RIM’s senior management submitted by a top RIM employee. The letter was written to address the “many problems” RIM is facing right now as a company and how they have done nothing to fix their problem. We all smelled BS over here so BBE decided not to write on it. Well apparently it stunk so bad, RIM got a whiff and have given BGR something to wipe with. The Official BlackBerry Blog has written a response to the claim and according to RIM, they’re selling about 100 smartphones per minute, 24 hours per day and they’ve got money to blow. Check below for the letter.

RIM CEO, Jim Balsillie, Stands Up For PlayBook

Well we all knew it was coming sooner rather than later. Earlier this morning, Research In Motion’s CEO (or Co-CEO, however you’d like to have it) & Chairman, Jim Balsillie, sat down with the Bloomberg’s Emily Chang and went on a full on offensive regarding the BlackBerry PlayBook and all the negativity surrounding this new BlackBerry tablet computer . He goes on saying that you can pair it with your BlackBerry smartphone when clearly the question was how the PlayBook will enable the non-BlackBerry user to share the same experience as a BlackBerry user. To his credit, he does mention new capabilities will be pushed out this Summer, as well as mentioning the 3G model, although he curiously fails to mention a 4G version.

Updated: BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone will NOT be available April 26th?

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone available April 26th? “RIM had a Social Media conference today in Toronto, and my entire college business and marketing class was invited to the event. RIM’s co-ceo Jim Balsillie revealed that they plan to bring BBM and “other services” to iPhone on April 26 via the app store. Major news networks are expected to pick up on this very soon! Balsillie also revealed that they plan to release an update to the app this summer which will take advantage of a new “notification system”!!” “We knew this story was a hoax when we first saw it, but we reached out to Research In Motion to get an official comment from the company. RIM tells us that the story, reporting that BlackBerry Messenger would arrive as an app for Apple’s iPhone on April 26th, is false. “RIM did not hold a conference in Toronto this week, and Jim Balsillie did not speak at any event in Toronto this week.” We’re not saying it isn’t coming at some point in the future, but BlackBerry Messenger is definitely not hitting the App Store on April 26th.” via BGR Via MacRumors

RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie Acknowledges Steve Jobs Comments

Yesterday Apple CEO Jobs came out and spoke about sales, his platform and those that are in competition around his company. Not only did BlackBerry smartphones come up in his address, Tablets were also mentioned along with other manufacturers. According to Jobs, RIM has a high mountain ahead of them to climb in order to keep up with Apple’s monstrous app selection. As for 7 inch tablets, “The seven-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone, and too small to compete with an iPad.” Tsk tsk, too bad for him. He says a 7-inch tablet is too big to compete with a smartphone. The PlayBook is not designed to compete with a BlackBerry. It is a tool that will be used side by side with your BlackBerry smartphone. Unlike the iPad, the PlayBook will run Data off of your current data plan, getting rid any extra fees. Why pay for data again? So who is the “smarter” phone here? Another thing, too small to compete with an iPad? Who even said this was being build to compete with an iPad? The PlayBook was created to enhance productivity and extend the same connectivity you get on a BlackBerry, but amplified. If anyone wants to put on a pair of gloves, its Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. He came out charged up earlier and fired back to Jobs’ address. This isn’t the first time we hear Jim respond to impractical claims before either. Hit the More button to read what Jim said. >>>
