BlackBerry Fact Check – BlackBerry 10 vs Apple’s iOS 8 for Enterprises

During Apple’s WWDC event, Apple unveiled iOS 8. Whilst doing so, the company did not hold back when discussing features for the enterprise including security, data management and productivity. Whilst that was admirable for 5 minutes, BlackBerry, more so BlackBerry 10 is reigning king when it comes to Enterprise, Productivity, Data and Device Management and last but not least, Security – FACT

Apple Board Member Uses a Blackberry

While some may argue that this is neither newsworthy nor does it hold any relevance, I argue that it does. This random piece of information stood out to me as a subliminal message, simply saying — You still have the choice. Lately online media has drawn and pushed the mental  picture that you either have an android/apple device or you don’t own a smartphone at all and as an avid BlackBerry user, I agree to disagree that those are the choices we are now limited to.

RIM Interviews App Analytic Distimo – It’s all about the data (and reporting)

We’ve been covering the Distimo App report since the start of our Blog for a couple of years now. Every month, the app analytic company Distimo releases app stats from the leading mobile app stores. In sum, they tell you what’s hot and what’s not when it comes to mobile applications. While at BlackBerry DevCon Europe, RIM had the chance to talk to Remco van den Elzen from Distimo. I encourage everyone to read the interview, especially application developers so that you can get the most out of your app whether is cash flow or clicks. Continue reading for more.

BlackBerry Brand Value Declines 25%, Now Worth $3.3 Billion

Being the stats nerd that I am along with being a huge BlackBerry fannatic, I couldn’t help but to post on this article that surfaced which has measured the BlackBerry brand value over recent years. According to the study from Brand Finance,  the BlackBerry brand value has decreased  by almost 25% since January of this year. The London-based Brand Finance calculates a brand value by forecasting the royalties that would accrue to a brand holding if that company licensed the brand to an operating company. In January, Brand Finance figured BlackBerry was worth $4.36 billion.Since then, it has dropped to $3.3 billion (see chart above). “Blackberry has also failed to recently capture the hearts and minds of consumers globally in the way that Apple has managed to do,” stated the release announcing the findings. “The Blackberry Playbook tablet device has struggled since its launch last April and has disappointed investors by failing to meet initial targets.”

Carriers Pushing for a Third Contender? BlackBerry is the Chosen One?

Moving into the coming weeks, the BlackBerry 7 generation lineup should be available to more carriers as devices make their way into operator channels. This means that carriers now have to “push” another brand in BlackBerry so that handsets get sold and consumers subscribe. Certainly, operators are familiar with the BlackBerry brand but since there was a long period without a new device launch, carriers’ emphasis towards pushing BlackBerry was rather diminishing. With the new lineup out and several more to come (Curves), carriers will begin to again promote the BlackBerry brand. But do they want to? With Apple and Android devices practically selling themselves, do carriers want to go through the steps to promote BlackBerry smartphones? The answer is yes, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.  Continue reading for details.

Apple Opens Up Store in Waterloo

As of now its no secret that things are heated in the smartphone arena. Well apparently Steve Jobs has added fire to the flame and has opened up an official Apple Store in the heart of BlackBerry land – Waterloo, Ontario in Canada. Will they achieve success? Well it’s a little too early to tell but 200+ people waited in line Saturday morning for the official opening of the Apple Store.  Check this, the store is located in the Conestoga Mall, which is only a 10 minute drive from RIM headquarters at Waterloo. Personally, I think it’s a good move that brings the competition even closer and will help put pressure on RIM to produce plus not let them get to complacent. How RIM responds to this shouldn’t be by any sort of public statement. Instead, RIM needs to keep all of their focus on putting QNX on handhelds and advancing their PlayBook tablet to the next level.

Apple Marketing 101: Choose Casey Anthony as News Category App Icon

Here is a taste of Apple’s marketing. Days after the acquittal of Casey Anthony, Apple has chosen Anthony as the poster girl for their News Category icon. Apple users browsing through “categories” have sent this to sites such as brobible, showing a photo of Casey Anthony displayed over the News section. Noting the social outcry over this verdict, it will be interesting to see how long they’ll keep her up. This also shows some of Apple’s ingenious marketing.

Why Can’t They Get Along

Let us all remember when the iPhone hype made every non-Apple smartphone producer shake in fear. Showing off at the Academy Awards with the latent support of Holywood,Apple rolled in its baby: the iPhone. Although we all loved the pinching and the swapping and so forth some of us who were smart enough saw that it basically offered what was already in the market, but with a brand new image and marketing magic. Following the first iPhone, 3G came and 3GS. Until the point when Apple was spreading rumours around its upcoming device,the iPhone 4, RIM decided not to mess around with Steve Jobs. Apple had its own story its own consumer community and user preferences and so did RIM. Apple was for fun RIM was for business. But suddenly RIM leaders panicked. They decided to roll out a device which would have multimedia as much as business. The result was the 9800 Torch. It failed in the market but became a huge hit among BB users (the author of this article rocks a black 9800). Why did it fail? The same question can be asked for iMessage which is being rolled out as a very bad spin off of BBM. Why did they fail?

RIM and Apple Infringe on Kodak Patent [GUILTY]

I reported earlier this year that RIM and Kodak were fighting in court over a patent which allows the previewing of digital images using ‘less processing power and storage space.’ According to Kodak, RIM and Apple must fork over $1 billion in licensing fees or else. Apple, who was also in the forefront of this suit along with RIM denied infringing any patents and argued their claim was invalid. Well the verdict is in. Read more to see what happened.

Feb Distimo Report Shows BlackBerry Users Pay for Facebook Chat

While going over the February issue of Distimo’s App analytic report, I noticed something in the BlackBerry App world, particularly, in the “top paid apps section.” If you look at the image above, Facebook chat makes the top 10 list twice. One version by Bare Apps and the other by Shendz. This tells us that BlackBerry users are willing to shell out the cash for a nice facebook chat app. Continue for More >>
