RIM joins the Virtual Global Taskforce

RIM recently announced that they are joining the fight against child exploitation by joining forces with the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT).  RIM, the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, World Vision Australia and The Code have joined the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) as private sector partners with existing industry partners Paypal and four others. “When it comes to combating online sexual exploitation, a collaborative approach is critical,” VGT AFP assistant commissioner, Neil Gaughan, said in a statement. “These new partnerships will assist VGT law enforcement agency members in sharing best practices and exploring new technologies to support innovative thinking to reduce the threat to children online.”

The main premise of the partnership is to use RIM’s global presence within the developer community to develop apps that will provide protection for children. The apps will be focused on protecting children from the harmful content that may be accessed from RIM’s mobile platform. Fred Nesbitt, RIM’s head of public safety, said that device security is critically important to protect children as well as other vunerable groups from the threat of online predators and exploitation groups.
