QNX Phones in the “Not So Distant Future”

Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of RIM, stated that QNX smartphones are already being worked on within RIM and they’re planning to show them off in October at the upcoming DevCon next month, although no release date has been announced.

Rumours and possible pictures of the BlackBerry labled “Colt” have been surfacing around the net as of late, featuring a dual core processor and touchscreen, while running the QNX operating system.

“Development efforts on the first QNX-based smartphone products are going extremely well. We plan to ensure that when we launch the product will have the features, industrial design and content and app ecosystem it needs to deliver a dynamic and industry leading customer experience. The development platform for QNX phones will be presented in more detail at DevCon in October, and prototype phones featuring the QNX operating system and development platform will be available in the not to distant future.”  RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis

Android based phones have already been released featuring a dual core processor, but during today’s  Q2 Fiscal 2012 results announcement conference call,  it appears RIM is being very positive regarding the  future of their handheld devices.  There are rumors though that the next QNX phone won’t be released with BES as RIM is having difficulty writing code for BES to operate with QNX .  This may become a major concern to shareholders, as currently RIM relies heavily on it’s corporate clientele.

Rumours are the “Colt”  is to be released in early 2012.
