Is A Porsche Design BlackBerry 10 Device In The Works?

Nearly two years ago, BlackBerry collaborated with Porsche Design on an exclusive edition of the Bold 9900 – the P’9981. Now, some leaked shots of a battery cover seem to suggest that a similar partnership may be brewing for an equally high-end BlackBerry 10 device.

The three shots display a fairly tall battery door with NFC contacts. The angular design very closely resembles that of the P’9981, and the door is even covered in genuine leather – definitely not a touch you normally see on mainstream devices. It also has carbon fibre accents on the inside. Although my mind first figured the door might be A10-sized, upon closer examination it seems very similar to the Z10 battery door. It has nearly-identical NFC contacts, microUSB, microHDMI, and 3.5mm ports, as well as the exact same speaker design at the bottom.

If we do see a Z10-based Porsche Design device, you can probably expect it to cost a heck of a lot more than your regular Z10. To give you an idea, the P’9981 cost $1,899 in Canada, while the Bold 9900 it was based on could be had for $599 – a premium of over 300%. Would you be willing to pay such a premium for an exclusive version of the Z10?
