Has Instagram Shut The Gates On Users Sideloading To BlackBerry 10?

Instagram is probably one of the greatest omissions from BlackBerry World as it stands. BlackBerry is working hard to get the app to BlackBerry 10, but while we wait, the only options users have had is to sideload a specific version of the Android app. Trouble is, users are now reporting that this no longer works – could Instagram have shut the gates on the sideloaded app?

Users first noticed the issue upon logging out of their sideloaded app – as soon as they tried to log back in, the app prompted them to update to a new version through Google Play. Anyone who has tried to re-sideload the app, or anyone sideloading the app for the first time, seems to be running into the same issue. And since this is the only version of Instagram that has ever worked when sideloaded, new users appear to be out of luck. The good news, however, is that if you’ve already sideloaded the app and are logged in, you should be okay for now, even if you restart or shut down the device – just make sure not to log out of your account in the app.

So what’s going on here? Any accounts affected can still log into the Instagram website, so it can’t be an account issue. It seems that Instagram has most likely blocked this version of the app. If this is the case however, it does seem like a bizarre move on their part. What could Instagram have to gain from blocking more potential users, regardless of whether the app is official or not? Could it be a signal that an official app is coming soon? Or does Instagram have some serious beef with BlackBerry 10? Sound off your thoughts in the comments, and let us know if you’ve been affected by this issue.
