If you are looking to get a big bang for your buck (literally) then the BlackBerry MPERO Q10 Privacy Screen from Empire is something you definitely want to purchase for your device. I had the chance to review other privacy screens for the Q10, one being from OtterBox that is priced at $24.95 and is not nearly as effective as the privacy screen you are about to see from MPERO, coming in at a price tag of only $2.29.

Product Features

Specially designed front screen protector for BlackBerry Q10.

Keeps unwanted wondering eyes from seeing what you are doing.

Non-adhesive backing will not leave sticky residue behind if you decide to remove screen protector.

Includes cloth, detailed instructions, and screen protector.

MPERO is a protected trademark.

MPERO’s privacy screen protector for BlackBerry Q10 offers superior protection from scratches, dust, and dirt that may be accumulated from everyday use. The privacy film used increases security by blurring out what’s seen on your screen when one might be looking from the side. The privacy screen protector for BlackBerry Q10 applies quickly and easily and has a self adhesive backing that will not leave sticky residue behind should you decide to remove or replace it. The precision-cut of the privacy screen protector for BlackBerry Q10 allows for a perfect fit with any case you may have protecting your device.

First off as you can clearly see the protective privacy film for the Q10 device is pitch black, which is the whole point of a privacy screen. MPERO took their time to create a perfect design with an effective piece of film to serve its purpose. Other trusted brands like OtterBox are a bit pricier and not as well designed to actually hide your screen. Check out the pictures below so you could see what I mean:

Looking at the image below, you could see the screen and keyboard are on and the screen is pitch black, you cannot read what is on the screen from an angle, this is exactly what I was looking for and MPERO has provided it. Being only $2.29 there is no way you could lose.
Overall this screen protector definitely serves its purpose I give it a 10/10 as it does what its supposed to do and it perfectly fits the device.

Additions like richer controls over media properties, enhanced camera gestures and low light performance, new loading icon across the OS (which is kind of trippy), additional photo editing features, multi-alarms, updated FaceBook UI, and even a slick gesture inside the browser. – James

After several precluding years we finally get the SuperPhone we’ve all been waiting for, the BlackBerry Q10.

A flagship-like contender sporting a QWERTY keyboard with its best in class design powered by super software, the QNX based machine is a beauty. We’re all proud of the hard work put into the device and grateful we have it in our hands but it’s time to look on.

In retrospect the Q10 is one that should have been delivered a year ago, maybe even two. In all honesty, I’m in love with the device but it displeases me when I should have had this device well long ago.

No question the Q10 is a SuperPhone. It has THE best keyboard on the market. The BlackBerry 10 OS powered by QNX is fresh, intuitive and mixes well with BlackBerry’s hardware. The app gap is closing and developers are starting to latch onto the platforms openness- Get ready folks BlackBerry and its users are headed in the right direction now the operation is not to derail.

One reason why people love the Q10 so much is because it looks and feels like a BlackBerry. Whether you’re using it one-handed or with both the Q10 is a pleasure to navigate and the physical response from its revamped QWERTY keyboard allows for an animated, streamlined communication experience. With that, it’s time to take the Q10 for what it is and look ahead to the next BlackBerry SuperPhone.

In comparison to the Z10 the main difference aside from the keyboard is screen size. Obviously you’re going to have a much larger screen with a virtual keyboard vs. a QWERTY- But it’s a game of adjustments and BlackBerry needs to adjust back to championship caliber.

My first adjustment in evolving the QWERTY SuperPhone would be to make it vertically larger. In doing so there is more room for a refitting advancement of its components.

By making the device vertically larger the ability to extend the screen size opens up with the end result being a larger screen. Switching between the Z10 and Q10 I can’t help but to say the Q10 feels a bit small and wouldn’t be a bad idea to extend it.

Take the TK Justice by the homie, DigitalHomeboy as an example of what the QWERTY SuperPhone looks like with its elongated design. Its 3.4” capacitated multi-touch HD display at 960x720P is a screen that works well on top of a full QWERTY keyboard. The Q10 is the open door for an even larger screen due to the straight fretted keyboard .

If BlackBerry were to adopt such a design not only would we get a larger screen but there would be plenty of room for a larger battery and processor – the makeup of a SuperPhone.

For now BlackBerry 10.2 is on its way, BlackBerry has yet to release an announcement for the PlayBook update and 3 devices are still unannounced. I would love to think we’ll be seeing an entry level touch device for emerging markets and two great SuperPhones, both a QWERTY and All-Touch version.

We will be explaining how to get Viber working on your BlackBerry 10 devices (for those who can’t wait for official app). With the guide published yesterday, how to run most Android 2.3.3 apps on your BlackBerry 10 devices this method has been confirmed to work for Viber.

This is an Android ported app, most Viber features are working but not all. To get Viber on your BlackBerry 10 device:

Have BlackBerry 10.1 or BlackBerry 10.2 installed (preferrably 10.1, OS is not crippled)

Download a Viber apk file (here is the one I used)

Use simplified how-to install/run Android 2.3.3 apps on BlackBerry 10. – Guide.

That’s it! The key to having Viber on BlackBerry 10 via this method is use the simplified guide.

While most features are working, a few that are not are:

Settings (app crashes)

Can’t open BlackBerry contacts (will sync after a while see screenshot)

For you music lovers out there who want Spotify on your BlackBerry 10 device, see guide posted yesterday.

As many of you are probably aware I have been sporting around the BlackBerry Z10 since April 29th when Verizon released their pre-orders. The BlackBerry I had before was the 9930 and honestly I wasn’t sure if I could get use to not having the physical keyboard but I decided to give it a try anyhow. Well needless to say I have had no issues (no reboots, no dropped calls, nothing) with the Z10 but in the back of my mind I was missing that great BlackBerry keyboard that I have become use to over the years. Well as of June 13th I now also have the BlackBerry Q10 and I want to give you my thoughts and comparison on a few things.

Keyboard
The BlackBerry Z10 keyboard is great, in fact I was able to type on it better than I expected. With the device predicting words as I go along it made things easy. I really liked how the Z10 would learn words that I use more often and start to fix my mistakes based on those words. It has a nice auto correction feature and it did fix a lot of mistakes I would make. That being said there were times when I first got the device that the Z10 would “correct” words that were spelled right and what I intended it to be to something that it thought I wanted, which was a pain. Another nice feature is the ability to “flick” words as they are being predicted to me, and as I became use to the feature I was able to flick an entire sentence up into my messages which saves time. My overall impression of the BlackBerry Z10 keyboard is that it’s a easy to type on but I was still having some issues with my typing abilities on it and I was making a lot of mistakes.

The BlackBerry Q10 keyboard to me is just the best one that BlackBerry has. I love how easy it is to type on it and I am just so much more accurate with what I am trying to type than I have been on the Z10. If you’re like me and still want help with word suggestions don’t worry because it has that as well. With the learning capability of Q10 you get personalized intelligent word suggestions and contextual auto correction. The Q10 keyboard now has a different look to it than my older BlackBerry 9930 did. There is no more keypad or any of those keys that use to be on the top portion of the keyboard. At first I thought not having the keypad would slow me down but it hasn’t at all (maybe because I was use to it from the Z10), in fact I haven’t even thought about the missing keypad at all. If you look at the keyboard closely you will see that each button is sloped so that there is a portion that is elevated and designed to prevent from tapping the wrong key. Now I know there will be some of you that say the virtual keyboard on the Z10 is the way to go, but for me I love the physical keybaord on the Q10 so much more.

Screen Size
This is one area that I loved about the BlackBerry Z10, with it having a 4.2-inch, 1280 x 768 resolution LCD and the display on the device looks absolutely amazing. It’s nice and bright, even under sunlight and the colors, contrast and viewing angles are all top notch. To me this was one of the biggest advantages of coming from the 9930. Every device I had in the past always had a small screen and now seeing this big screen was one of the big reasons that I decided to try out the Z10. It’s great to watch videos or play games on and even though I’m not much of a mobile gamer this was one of the first things I knew I would miss if I decided to go with the Q10.

The Q10 has a 3.1 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen and offers a resolution of 720×720 which makes it quite a bit smaller than the Z10. Now don’t get me wrong here even though the screen is smaller the display is still sharp in detail and colors. The Q10′s Super AMOLED display is more energy efficient (which will help with the battery) than the LCD on the Z10 as well. Like I said before the screen size is a definite plus for the BlackBerry Z10.

Battery
This seems to be one of the biggest concerns for everyone and it is for me as well. I have always noticed that when a new OS is released for a certain carrier the one question I see the most is, how’s the battery life? Well even though I have only had the BlackBerry Q10 for just a few days I can see that the Q10 is superior in that department. The Z10 has a 1800mAH battery versus the 2100mAH battery that’s in the Q10 but if you’re anything like me the only thing that really matters is how the battery lasts in everyday use. I consider myself a very heavy user as I’m using my device pretty much all day long and on my Z10 I noticed that by lunch time I needed to either switch out the battery or find all place to plug it in, but on the Q10 it’s almost dinner time and with the same exact use as always I still have 22% remaining.

Apps
I just wanted to point out that there is still a small gap between the Z10 and Q10 as apps are still being made compatiable to work with the Q10. When I switched my BlackBerry ID to the Q10 as usual all the apps carried over but when I went to start downloading them I did notice that I did lose one of my paid apps so hopefully the developers get all the apps to run properly on the Q10 soon. As far as my sideloaded apps go (Instagram, KiK, and Flipboard) I had no major issues with them, but Instagram looks and runs nicer on the Z10.

Overall
The BlackBerry Z10 is a great device and I have truly enjoyed it but my daily device from now on will be the BlackBerry Q10. Even though I will miss the screen size on the Z10 (don’t worry I will still keep my Z10 on standby for those times I need a bigger screen) I really can’t do without the physical keyboard on the Q10. In fact there is another cool feature that I failed to mention earlier that’s on the Q10, it’s called Type and Go. Basically this feature just makes sending messages (text, email, BBM, Facebook, Twitter or even LinkedIn) so much easier. For example, typing “BBM” and then a contact’s name will launch the BlackBerry Messenger app and then just add him/her as the recipient. From there I’m all set to start chatting with the person I wanted. It’s a very neat system and helps make the BlackBerry Q10 so much smoother.

Now that you know my thoughts and opinions on both of the BlackBerry 10 devices let me just say no matter which one you decide to go with you will not be disappointed. The new OS is just tremendous and I only see things getting so much better. When I first received my BlackBerry Z10 it came with OS 10 pre-installed and I then moved up to OS 10.1 and things improved dramatically, which shows BlackBerry is hard at work. On the Q10 it came pre-installed with OS 10.1 and now I’m just waiting on OS 10.2. We may be missing a few key apps but over time I feel those apps will join the platform as well. I have personally been a member of Team BlackBerry for many years and I truly can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring.

We posted a bit of a more complex tutorial a few days ago, this walk through will be a lot easier and support Windows/Mac/Linux operating systems.

To get started:

Requirements
1. Java JRE
2. Debug Token
Note: To get a debug token:

Simply request tokens here. Keep note of the ‘PIN’ you chose.

Edit config.txt from my package below. PINPASS is the pin you chose on the webpage, above. KEYPASS is a password of your choosing. DEVICEPIN to the pin of your phone.

Drag the two .csj files that were emailed to you on to a-registertokens.

Run b-createdebugtoken.

You should have a debugtoken.bar if everything went successfully. Sideload it to your device and continue.

Windows Steps

Download this package: here. [Updated 15th June #6]

Put your debugtoken.bar in the same directory as the script.

Now just drag any Android app .apk on to y-android2bb.bat. A .bar should be generated.

Mac/Linux

Download y-maclinux.

Put your debugtoken.bar in same directory.

Now, in a terminal, run:

Code:

./y-maclinux.sh MyAndroidApp.apk

Now you can install this .bar on your device and it should just work. You can use the included z-installer.bat or other means. (I experienced issues on Windows 8 using z-installer, was a breeze when installing needed .bar files via DDPB or Chrome Extension)

Issues

If the createdebugtokens cannot find your author.p12, it is looking in %APPDATA%\..\Local\Research In Motion for a file called ‘author.p12′

If you get ’881 no debug token found’ that means you didn’t install your debugtoken.bar on your phone.

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day for those of us who like to tinker with our BlackBerry 10 devices – a bit of hacking has opened up the possibility to sideload a lot more apps than possible before. This little hack, however, got me thinking about the full potential of Android Player, and why BlackBerry hasn’t allowed developers to tap into it so far.

Allow me to explain. The hack discovered yesterday essentially places the app you’re sideloading into a debug mode. In doing so, it taps into a very special Android Player permission, known as “_sys_android_rrr”. The permission allows Android apps requiring native Android code to run within Android Player – normally, Android Player only supports Java apps. This is the same permission that you’ll find was added to the Instagram .BAR file leak, as well as the Netflix .BAR file, and even the official Skype app you’ll find on BlackBerry World. Those .BAR files, however, were signed using signing keys that have this permission enabled, while the keys normally issued by BlackBerry do not. Using a debug token seems to get around this, with the drawback of having to renew the token every 30 days. The initial process is a fair bit more complicated than regular sideloading as well.

This hack allows us to draw a very important conclusion – Android Player does, in fact, have support for native Android apps. Publicly, BlackBerry has only provided the tools to bring over Java apps from Android, but there’s clearly something going on within Android Player that allows us to do more. The potential here is huge – through the new hack, people are sideloading the latest version of Instagram, Netflix, Spotify, Grand Theft Auto 3, Temple Run, and other big-name apps straight from Android. Why, then, has BlackBerry kept this all a secret? Why not give developers the tools to port native Android apps, potentially opening the gates for a massive influx of apps? Well, there’s a couple reasons that might explain it.

One of the possibilities is that BlackBerry doesn’t want developers to get too lazy. What I mean by this, is that they want to retain some incentive for developers to eventually put out a native version of the app. By making the Android Player imperfect, it makes more sense as a stepping stone to a native app, rather than a permanent solution. If Android Player worked perfectly, the developer might simply dump the Android version of their app on BlackBerry World and call it a day. This theory does have a major flaw however – why create this permission in the first place if you’re not going to allow developers to use it? But then again, the Skype app takes advantage of the permission, so perhaps BlackBerry has reserved it for must-have apps that are difficult to persuade. I will admit, however, that the argument seems a little weak.

This brings me to my second theory. If you’ve used Skype on BlackBerry 10, you’ve probably ran into a bug or two at some point. You may have also noticed that the Hub integration is far from perfect – there’s no individual Skype pane, and acting on the notification requires going into the app, rather than responding from within the Hub. So, what if BlackBerry is just trying to improve Android Player before they let developers tap into it entirely? For starters, to come out and claim you have a solution that allows all Android apps to be ported straight to BlackBerry 10 is going to require an update to the latest version of Android – that’s exactly what they’re doing in OS 10.2. Moreover, there are still plenty of performance quirks and APIs to be sorted. If Android Player is to become a serious solution for apps on BlackBerry 10, it’s going to need performance that is nothing short of exceptional, and access to all of the same APIs that native apps can tap into. This would mean things such as being able to integrate Android apps into the Hub – a huge step in narrowing the gap between native and Android apps.

Ultimately, however, all we can do right now is guess. The one thing we know for sure is that BlackBerry had to have implemented the ability to run native Android apps for a good reason – it’s not a simple task by any means, and there’s at least one app on BlackBerry World that takes advantage of it. Perhaps some more light will be shed on the matter once OS 10.2 rolls out, with the updated Android Player. We can only hope that BlackBerry plans to use this ability to its full potential one day, bringing BlackBerry 10 a step closer to closing the dreaded app gap.
