Facebook enters the ring as talks with BlackBerry Execs may signal interest

Guess this isn’t really news, but rumor. However, the Wall Street Journal reports today that Facebook has stepped into talks with BlackBerry executives regarding a potential bid for the company by the Silicon Valley social media giant. Facebook has been a well-known supporter of the BlackBerry platform for years now, once upon a time exclusively supporting the platform and it’s prioritization on mobile security.

The meeting between the two companies took place in Northern California and seems to have been a conversation starter, one started by BlackBerry and not Facebook, sources speculate.

Facebook could be a potentially strong suitor for BlackBerry as their financials are enough to encompass the company as a whole, or pick it apart and use the pieces (or patents, me thinks) it needs to push ahead even farther in the social media and technology space.

If you’re keeping track at home so far we have one bid from Fairfax Financial Holdings – led by Prem Watsa and that’s it. However, we have reported potential interest from companies such as Cisco, Google, SAP, Lenovo, Cerberus CapitalColler CapitalFormer Apple CEO John Sculley, and coming soon – the BlackBerry Empire Team (joking of course) – have all considered bids and have begun exploring the possibility of bidding for BlackBerry.
