Here’s a great new app for those of you that like to make sure the emails you exchange with folks are safe and secure. The developer from Toysoft Development has just released an app called Secure Mail for BlackBerry 10 devices which will allow you and your contacts to exchange emails privately and securely. Secure Mail is perfect for those of you that exchange work emails with a colleague, or even the ones that you just want to remain private with family and friends.

For those of you wondering how Secure Mail works here’s a brief description of the app from the developer.

Secure Mail allows you and your contacts to exchange email messages securely. Both you and your contacts must have Secure Mail installed on your BlackBerry. You can not send encrypted messages to contacts that you do not have a public key for.

Secure Mail uses BlackBerry’s FIPS-validated cryptography and Security Builder Engine, RSA Public-key cryptography for key exchange and AES 256 bits for encryption.

In order to use Secure Mail you must create your public and private keys, then email your public key to your contacts. Your contact will then save the public key and email you their public key. Once both parties have each others public keys encrypted messages can be sent and received. When you receive an encrypted message you will always be prompted for your password. Without the correct password the encrypted message can not be opened.

Your private key is always encrypted and stored on the device or on the SD card. Without your password the private key can not be decrypted.

Here’s some of the other features.

  • Secure Mail supports multiple accounts.
  • You can create different public and private keys for different email accounts with different passwords.
  • Secure Mail is integrated with the BlackBerry Hub.
  • You read encrypted messages directly in the Hub but composing encrypted email you must use Secure Mail.
  • In the future version you will be able to directly compose from the Hub.
