Blippar launches as FIRST ever image-recognition app on BlackBerry World

Blippar, just launched as the FIRST ever image-recognition app on BlackBerry World. BlackBerry Z10 users will now have access to the rich multimedia content that image-recognition technology provides — previously only available on iOS and Android.

Haven’t heard of Blippar? Think of it this way: what Shazam does for music and sound, Blippar does for images. With their proprietary image-recognition technology, they overlay interactive content on top of a static image, like a print ad or product label. By opening up the app and holding the device up to a ‘blippable’ image, users can unlock exclusive videos, games, sweepstakes entries and more from the likes of Budweiser, Hearst, and even Ke$ha.

Blippar is proud to be the first native image-recognition app on BlackBerry’s devices, especially at a time when Google Glass and others are bringing augmented reality into the mainstream. To see it for yourself, check out the technology in action here.

Blippar arrives as a global native app into BlackBerry World for BlackBerry Z10

First image-recognition app to launch on BlackBerry World

NEW YORK, NY — July 5, 2013 — Mobile visual discovery app Blippar today announced its availability as the first image-recognition platform on the new BlackBerry10 operating system. The pioneering image-recognition app is available for download in all countries from BlackBerry World for users of the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone.

The launch gives millions of Z10 users access to a whole new world of rich multimedia content previously only accessible to iOS and Android users. The visual discovery tool enables BlackBerry users to effectively digitize the static, physical world around them. By simply pointing the Z10’s high quality camera at ‘blippable’ objects and images, users will experience them jumping to life with exclusive, interactive content. There are a number of existing markers available for Blackberry users to start blipping, including Budweiser’s iconic bowtie logo, Ke$ha’s “Warrior” album, Metro newspapers, and many 100s more, all typically identified by the Blippar ‘b’ icon on the image, or found within the in-app catalogue list.

Blippar collaborated with BlackBerry on the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 OS in January this year by enabling iPhone and Android smartphone users to experience the Z10 on their phones with a handset virtual takeover. Those with an iPhone or Android smartphone had to visit www.bbtakeover.me to blipp the webpage to launch the Blackberry 10 operating system takeover onto their handsets, in a world’s first allowing a sneak preview experience of the new BB10 OS.

Omar Tayeb, Blippar CTO said:“Consumers have responded extremely well to the BlackBerry 10 OS since its launch six months ago, and we are thrilled to introduce Blippar as a global native app to the millions of people around the world who own the Z10 phone. We worked closely with BlackBerry with launching their ground-breaking OS in January and now we’re proud to be the first image recognition app for their devices. BlackBerry have always had a strong following in international markets, and our availability on their platform will go a long way in helping global awareness of Blippar and image-recognition technology.”
