BlackBerry Tops Smartphone Market Share in North America

I believe these stats have been gathered correctly. I’m not biased of the outcome, rather in favor of the method. They looked at two primary factors here. The first in operating system market share, and the other in manufacturer market share.

The results? Currently in North America, BlackBerry still has the largest market share amongst smartphone manufacturers and operating systems. I don’t want to butcher their report, so hit the More button to check it out. >>>

Currently in North America, BlackBerry still has the largest market share amongst smartphone manufacturers and operating systems. However, Apple and Adroid have narrowed the gap drastically over the past year with Apple´s continued success of the iPhone, and Android´s successful open source strategy with its OEM partners. Furthermore, Microsoft has introduced Windows Phone 7 which will add another competitive OS into the market.

There are several areas to consider when looking at the smart phone market. The two primary factors are operating system market share, and manufacturer market share. Although they are two different areas, they do cross paths due to various business models used by the industry participants.

While BlackBerry and Apple use a closed model – choosing to develop their operating system along with designing and manufacturing the devices, Microsoft and Google develop the operating systems and distribute them to manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung and HTC in order to integrate the OS into their hardware. However, Microsoft charges licensing fees while Google provides their OS for free.
