BlackBerry In Discussions With Other Handset Makers To Preload BBM On Devices

With BlackBerry Messenger now officially going cross-platform, BlackBerry is looking at ways of getting consumers to adopt the messenger on other platforms. In a recent interview with CNET, Chief Operating Officer Kristian Tear revealed that one of the possibilities they are exploring is preloading BBM on handsets from other manufacturers.

“There is interest from other handset makers,” said the COO. Although Tear did not reveal any details on who these manufacturers may be, he said their interest stems from BBM’s popularity in countries where it is one of the primary methods of communication, as well as the overall userbase of 61 million customers globally.

When asked about the risk of losing customers to other platforms by opening BBM up to them, Tear simply said, “We don’t feel like that is a risk. Obviously, if we did, we might have acted differently.” It’s great to see BlackBerry display so much confidence in BlackBerry 10. The iOS and Android versions of BBM are still set to release sometime this summer, although Tear declined to provide a more specific timeline.
