Apple Borrows from PlayBook

The old adage maintains “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Well as shares in Research in Motion tumble to an all new 52-week low, they could certainly use a “pick-me-up” in the form of flattery.

WWDC announcements have not only hurt RIM or Google, they’ve also taken down shares of Apple as the trading day carried onward.   One element of today’s announcements that have people scratching their heads is why the leader in innovation and technology has announced that several new iOS features will come as inspired by several OS designs featured on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Not only will Apple feature new side-to-side swipe “multitasking”, but they will be releasing their new iOS messenger that will compete with BlackBerry Messenger and bring new file sharing and real-time “typing” notifications that the BlackBerry Messenger has been touting for a good part of the decade.

How will RIM react, as I’m sure they’ve heard this announcement by now, only time will tell. I, for one, am entirely skeptical of any 10″ PlayBook release…but with analysts claiming delays on new BlackBerry devices well before the delays actually came about, maybe we’ll be seeing some truth to these rumors soon enough. Until then, I’m looking forward to the new PlayBook update that will hopefully be released today.
